As noted by the ASTE Strategic Priorities, the Equity Committee is working to more directly assess the processes in place to promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and access in an effort to make systematic recommendations to the organization. In light of these priorities, we have established three goals to achieve in 2023-2024: (a) organize a 2nd year of the 2-day virtual
Call to Reflection and Action Summit, (b) create a repository of articles related to equity-based research and teaching from JSTE, Innovations, and CITE Science on the ASTE website, and (c) interrogate editorial policies with respect to critical consciousness for JSTE and Innovations to seek possibilities for wider access. We formed sub-committees to begin this work after the January ASTE Annual Meeting and worked remotely in small groups. We met as a whole committee on March 9 and May 9, 2023 to check in on progress, discuss barriers to the work, and to offer additional resources. As of the submission of this report, we have selected dates for the 2023 Call to Reflection and Action Summit (November 28-29, 2023), have outlined the agenda, and are considering four articles to discuss at the Summit. We have also started the search for the articles in the repository, are beginning to flesh out what is meant by DEI for this work, and are refining criteria for inclusion. Regarding the examination of editorial policies with respect to critical consciousness, the subcommittee is planning to reach out to ASTE to gather feedback about members’ experiences to better define the problem.
